You’ve probably heard about digital marketing or just marketing for a long time, you probably even know some people in the field. But when you ask yourself “What do digital marketers do?” The details get a little fuzzy.

Is it a 9-5 job? Do they have an office? I’ve been asking myself this very question for a few years now. What do Digital Marketers do? What’s their day like?

In a field as broad as marketing and (still) pretty recent as digital marketing there’s definitely a good reason for your and my confusion, in fact after careful and deep research I found many marketing job descriptions that looked entirely different for two professionals who shared similar jobs and that just made more confused.

So, let’s start from the basics: What is digital marketing?

Social Media Marketing is the combination of strategies to promote a brand online so it can achieve specific marketing goals.

It means finding the right audience on social platforms and working to get the right attention for a brand. That way, it becomes well-known and relevant.

It also raises engagement and attracts more potential clients.

Let’s talk about engagement. It basically means that more people are engaged in your brand, in your project, therefore there will be more potential buyers.

But here’s where it gets fuzzy and tricky. Many people, me included at first, think Social Media Marketing is only about publishing cute posts in a feed and wrongly believe that will suffice to make a brand successful. It’s far from that.

A good digital marketing agency has to think of a compelling strategy, do the planning, produce daily content, interact with followers and general audience, invest in Ads and do monitoring.

Why do you need to do Social Media marketing?

Think of it this way, social media changed our way to communicate, the marketing world simply adjusted to that change. Let’s look at the main advantage that this new way of working is bringing to brands all around the world:

  • Raise Engagement
  • Raise the Brand’s reach
  • Generate more traffic and conversation
  • Humanize the brand

This last one struck me.

So, now that we’ve drawn a good picture of the world in which they operate, let’s circle back to our main inquiry: What do digital marketers do?

If you take a minute to think about everything that happens online these days, you’ll have a hint at how vast they operate.

Content Marketing is one of those tasks. It’s the most imaginative, engaging and creative way to communicate what a company is all about. It attracts customers by creating content that is interesting to them.

Then we have video making and marketing, which tracks engagement at a much deeper level than any other forms of communications.

Basically, digital marketers are in charge of driving brand awareness through all the digital channels. They create worlds, ideas, strategies that will make your brand impossible not to get noticed.

If you’re into writing, there’s content making, if you like visuals there’s graphic or web design. Analysis lover? Data analysis could be your thing.

Going from all these roles you might want to change the first question to: “What don’t digital marketers do?” If you think of a career with many options that is constantly changing, rebranding itself and sounds exhilarating this might be for you.

Turns out Digital Marketers do creative work, a lot more than I would think. To take a brand’s vision, to make it relevant and believable by working as a team, makes the job and the brand human, relatable, interesting... indispensable.

Also, to be fair, there’s more numbers and data analysis than you’d think. So, kudos to all of you out there.
